Sustainability Courses

Environmental Communication and Sustainability
COMM 2000 (Spring 2012)
Instructor: Jenna N. Hanchey, GPTI

In this course, we will explore this general question: as communication students, how do we relate to the concept and enactment of sustainability? This can be addressed from two angles: sustainability as an object of study for communication scholars, and sustainability as a call to action. We will be exploring these two sides of sustainability, and thus have one textbook for each side. Hendry addresses the study of Environmental Communication, and how sustainability can be investigated in a scholarly manner, while The Worldwatch Institute brings us examples of sustainability initiatives in action.

Our goal, then, is to take these texts – along with other materials such as documentaries, advertisements, news articles, TED talks, and more – and figure out the ways in which nature or the environment is conceptualized, what different people mean when they say “sustainability,” and what the implications of these things are on the way we live and act. The course will be heavily participation based, with class time consisting of discussion, activities, and interaction with guest speakers from local environmental organizations. The semester will culminate in a final project wherein you will design your own sustainability initiative and defend the ethics of your communication strategies.
